Tuscany’s Hill Towns

Scattered across the hills around Villa Cetinale are some of Tuscany’s most characterful towns, each offering its own mix of history, architecture and local life. They work well as morning visits, long lunches or unhurried afternoons without too much planning.

Tuscany’s Hill Towns

Monteriggioni is perhaps the most striking on arrival, its medieval walls and towers still encircling the town much as they have for centuries. Volterra offers something different, with its Etruscan heritage, artisan workshops and wide views across the surrounding countryside. In Chianti, Radda remains one of the region’s most attractive small towns, with wine bars, independent shops and a relaxed pace.

Closer to the villa, Colle Val d’Elsa is well worth exploring for its historic upper town and long association with crystal and glassmaking. Massa Marittima, slightly further afield, rewards the extra journey with a remarkable cathedral square and a beautifully preserved centre.

Part of the pleasure lies in travelling between them. Quiet roads pass through vineyards, olive groves and wooded hills, making the journey as enjoyable as the destination. Many guests combine two or three towns in a day, stopping for lunch, a wine tasting or time to wander.
