A Legend in the Heart of Siena

Twice a year - on 2nd July (Palio di Provenzano) and 16th August (Palio dell’Assunta) - Siena transforms from a serene medieval city into a living canvas of passion, history and communal pride. The vast shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, framed by pitched rooftops and Gothic façades, becomes the stage for the world‑famous Palio horse race: “blood, dust & devotion” distilled into ninety seconds of breathtaking spectacle.

Close to Home: A Day of Discovery

Situated a mere 25 minutes by car from Villa Cetinale, Siena makes for an effortless yet full‑bodied day trip. Arrive early to weave through the labyrinth of ochre‑coloured alleys, to inhale the aroma of ricciarelli and panforte, and to ascend the Torre del Mangia for a birds‑eye view of the city’s russet urban sprawl.

Come race time, the pallida dust of the piazza rises, drums thunder, silk banners snap in the wind and horses, bareback and bold, circle the tight track in a blur. It’s a ritual that scrapes at the bones—of the riders, the horses, the spectators, and of Siena itself, whose ancient contrade (districts) live and die by this annual drama.

More Than Just a Race

The Palio isn’t over once the flag drops. It’s followed by raucous celebrations in back‑streets, processions through chapels, and the solemn adoration of the Madonna. The city’s Duomo, a soaring Gothic masterpiece of striped marble and gilded mosaics, stands nearby—offering calm reflection after the frenzy of the piazza.
